An injection-molded plastic kit of an Italian light delivery van in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Bronco Models. The subject is the commercial version of the small Fiat 500, known by the nickname Topolino. Besides the plastic parts the package also holds photo-etched sheet, clear parts for the glazing and a set of civilian figures, so one box yields a complete civilian scene, a good addition to military dioramas where a civilian element tends to be what brings a scene to life.
The Fiat 500 appeared in 1936 as a very small, economical car meant for the general public and quickly became popular. It got the nickname Topolino, meaning little mouse, because of its size. Shortly after the passenger version was introduced a van variant with a closed box body followed, intended for small traders and craftsmen. At first it had a single seat for the driver, and later a two-seat version came that made up the main part of production. Cars of this type remained a common sight on Italian roads throughout the 1940s.
The body of a small car is on show from every side, so it pays to spend time smoothing the parting seams. Finish the interior and the frame before closing the body up, and mask the clear parts and fit them only after varnishing. A civilian car takes brighter, more saturated shades than military equipment, and a gloss varnish on the body comes out well if the base is sanded with very fine paper before it is laid on. Paint the figures separately and keep the weathering on the car restrained: fine dust on the fenders and the wheels is enough, as exaggerated grime would look unnatural on a civilian car.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
