About product

Leopard 1 A3/A4 in 1:35 scale, a Meng kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the main battle tank Leopard 1 in the A3 and A4 versions in 1:35 scale from Meng. The package contains roughly 470 plastic parts on a large number of sprues, two photo-etched frets (the grilles and meshes of the engine compartment), clear parts for the periscopes and the headlights and two solutions for the tracks, either assembled from individual plastic links or the simpler rubber (vinyl) tracks. The decals cover four machines: three from the German Bundeswehr (among them one in the NATO three-tone camouflage scheme and one in a uniform dark green) and one Greek Leopard GR1. The kit has no interior and no figures, as the detail is concentrated on the exterior, the running gear and the turret.

The real subject

The Leopard 1 came about in the 1960s and built on the doctrine of the time: a light, fast and mobile machine with a 105 mm gun rather than a heavily armored colossus. The armor therefore stayed relatively thin. The A3 and A4 versions got a new welded angular turret with spaced armor, which differs at a glance from the early Leopard 1s with their cast rounded turret, and that is exactly the most conspicuous mark of this kit. The A4 also carries the PERI R12 commander's sight and has no gunner's roof periscope, which is typical of the A3. The later Leopard 2 is already a different generation: a modern main battle tank with composite armor and a 120 mm smoothbore gun, developed in the 1970s and 1980s.

Building and painting tips

Go about it in the classic way: the running gear and the wheels first, and only then close the hull up, because once it is glued you will not get at the torsion bars and the track ends. Glue with thin cement for plastic, assemble the individual track links on a flat surface and let them firm up before you pull them onto the wheels. Apply a primer before painting and spray the camouflage with an airbrush (the NATO three-tone works well masked with modeling putty for a soft transition). Weathering comes at the end: a dark wash into the scribed lines and the gaps, dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower hull, chipped edges with a dry brush.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of military vehicles in 1:35
  • Fans of Cold War Bundeswehr and NATO vehicles
  • Those who want to compare the two generations, the Leopard 1 next to the Leopard 2
  • Collectors who like the choice between individual track links and the quick rubber option
  • Builders of dioramas from the 1980s (NATO camouflage, training grounds, forest terrain)

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They are not variants of one tank but two generations. The Leopard 1 is a machine of the 1960s, lighter, fast, with a 105 mm gun and fairly thin armor, because the doctrine of the time bet on mobility. The Leopard 2 is a modern main battle tank of the 1970s and 1980s with composite armor and a 120 mm smoothbore gun.

Most of all in the turret. The early Leopard 1s had a cast rounded turret, while the A3 and A4 got a welded angular turret with spaced armor. The A4 also carries the PERI R12 commander's sight and lacks the gunner's roof periscope that the A3 has.

You do not. Both options are in the package: individual plastic links for maximum detail and rubber (vinyl) tracks, which go on quickly and are more than enough in detail for most builds.

No, this kit contains neither an interior nor crew figures. The detail is concentrated on the exterior, the turret and the running gear.
