This injection-molded plastic kit from Trumpeter shows the Soviet light cross-country truck GAZ-66 (4x4) in 1:35 scale. The set is richly broken down: a glazed cab with an interior, a full drivetrain with the engine and the axles, a canvas-covered bed and photo-etched parts; the exact part count is given on the box.
The GAZ-66 was one of the most widespread light trucks of the Soviet army. Its characteristic cab set above the engine, in a cab-over-engine layout, all-wheel drive, a front winch and a central tire inflation system made it a very capable cross-country vehicle. A short wheelbase and generous ground clearance added to that and made it popular with airborne units as well. It served as the main means of transport of motor rifle units and in many countries of the former Eastern bloc it is still in use today in civilian as well as military roles. There was a whole range of bodies, from carrying men to workshop and signals vehicles.
Assemble and paint the chassis with the engine and the cab interior before you close the vehicle up; once the cab is shut they are out of reach. Mask the glazing before spraying. Even the base out with a muted green, the Soviet shade, brighten the edges and weather the running gear and the wheels with dust and mud pigments. Bring out the canvas of the bed by lightly highlighting the tops of the folds and shading their hollows.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
