At the start of the war the KV-1 was the Soviet trump card. Its armor stood up to most German anti-tank guns of the day and single machines were able to hold up a whole attacking formation. The earliest production form carried the 76.2 mm L-11 gun, recognizable by the conspicuous recoil cylinder mounted above the barrel; later batches were given more modern weapons. Power came from a twelve-cylinder diesel. The strengths of the tank were paid for by considerable weight, clumsiness and an unreliable transmission, which crews in the field had to cope with themselves. It is precisely this early form with a short career that makes the variant a rewarding subject among collectors.
Finish and paint the running gear before you close the hull up and fit the fenders. The welded sides of the turret come out well once the welds are gently picked out. Bring the Soviet green to life with a lighter tone on the horizontal surfaces, or the model will look flat. Dust and dry earth suit the summer fighting of 1941, while winter scenes call for a worn white overspray with the base finish showing through.
