A plastic kit of the Soviet heavy tank in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The subject is a transitional solution that came about by joining the hull of the lightened KV-1S tank with a turret carrying an 85 mm gun.
The KV-1S tank came about in the autumn of 1942 by lightening the original KV-1. It received thinner armor, a new smaller cast turret, a reworked rear and, as the first Soviet heavy tank, a commander's cupola with all-round vision, all of which made it faster and more mobile than its predecessor. The 76 mm gun, however, was no longer enough against the new German tanks, so a way was sought to get a more powerful weapon into the machine. The answer was an 85 mm D-5T gun in a new turret set on the KV-1S hull. Out of this work came the production KV-85, the last link in the whole KV line, and the experience fed into the tanks of the IS series as well. The vehicles with the 85 mm gun went into action in 1943 and in effect closed the chapter of Soviet heavy tanks of the first half of the war.
Finish the running gear and the lower hull before you fit the fenders; on tanks of the KV line the running gear is the most prominent part of the model. Assemble the link tracks in longer runs and let them hang before the glue has fully set, so that they sit naturally on the return rollers. The painting rests on Soviet protective green; bring it to life by lightening the upper surfaces, with a dark wash into the welds and worn metal on the edges and the walkways. Apply the mud and dust from the bottom upwards.
