An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet tank destroyer SU-122-54 in 1:35 scale from the brand Hobby Boss. The model rounds out the range of postwar Soviet vehicles, for which the same maker also has a kit of the T-54 medium tank.
The SU-122-54 came about in the first half of the 1950s as a self-propelled gun without a rotating turret, built on the chassis of the T-54 medium tank. The 122 mm gun was mounted in a fixed armored casemate, which made it possible to use a markedly heavier weapon than a turret of the same weight could have carried. The secondary armament consisted of heavy machine guns. The vehicle was to replace the older self-propelled guns from the war and to act against armored targets as well as against fortifications. Only a small number of examples were built and the service life was not long, because the Soviet army soon moved on to tanks with more powerful guns in a turret. It is precisely the small number built that makes the SU-122-54 an interesting subject for collectors.
The running gear corresponds to the T-54 tank, so it pays to fit and align all the wheels at once, so that the tracks sit without tension. Test-fit the long barrel dry and fit it only after the casemate has been painted. The uniform green finish is brought to life well by modulating the shade on the large surfaces. The surface breaks come out after a dark wash; concentrate dust and mud on the running gear, the fenders and the lower edge of the hull.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
