About product

Tiran 4 Sharir, early version with a blade 1:35 (MiniArt)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the Israeli Tiran 4 Sharir tank in its early production form, fitted with a dozer blade, in 1:35 scale from MiniArt. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. On its military kits MiniArt is known for fine surface engraving and a generous parts breakdown, so the build is more demanding than that of simplified kits and will repay a more experienced modeler rather than an outright beginner.

The real subject

In Israeli service the designation Tiran was carried by captured Soviet tanks of the T-54 and T-55 series, which after repair were adapted to local conditions and completed with equipment according to Israeli practice. The Tiran 4 is based on the T-54; the Sharir version is a more deeply reworked machine rearmed with a 105 mm gun of Western design, with revised stowage, new stowage baskets and a different arrangement of external equipment. The dozer blade on the front of the hull extends the use of the vehicle to engineering work — clearing obstacles, pushing soil and preparing firing positions. The combination of a Soviet base and Western armament makes this machine a rewarding and visually unmistakable subject among modelers.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the running gear and the inner spaces before you close up the hull — once it is glued there is no getting to them. Separate the fine parts from the sprues with flush-cutting nippers and level the remains of the sprue gates with a scalpel, not by twisting. Glue with thin plastic cement drawn to the edge of the joint by capillary action. Apply a primer before painting, which evens the surface out and reveals scratches. Spray the base shade with an airbrush in several light coats, add modulation and apply the decals over a gloss clear coat. Build the weathering up gradually: first a wash in the recesses, then dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower part of the hull, and finally dry wear on the edges and in the places the crew touches often. The blade and the front of the hull will take more pronounced metal wear.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of building tanks in 1:35 scale
  • Collectors of Israeli armored vehicles and of conversions of Soviet vehicles
  • Builders of dioramas where engineering equipment comes into play
  • Followers of advanced weathering and dust effects

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Israeli designation for captured and adapted Soviet tanks based on the T-54. The Sharir version is a more deeply reworked machine with a 105 mm gun.

Rather not. Kits from this manufacturer tend to have many small parts and call for patience and some basic experience of building armored vehicles.

The parts count and the make-up of the decal sheet are given in the instructions included in the box.

It is a separate subassembly on the front of the hull. It pays to attach it only after the hull has been painted and to add more pronounced metal wear on the cutting edge.
