About product

Bronco 1:35 Allied Bailey Bridge Type M2, a plastic kit

This injection-molded plastic kit from Bronco represents the Allied Bailey Bridge Type M2 in 1:35 scale. It is not a vehicle but an engineer structure in its own right, ideal as the central element of a diorama or as a base under models of equipment. The set combines plastic parts with photo-etched sheet, metal parts and cable; the exact contents are given on the packaging.

The real subject

The Bailey bridge was a British prefabricated lattice-girder bridge, one of the most successful engineering inventions of the Second World War. It was made up of light steel panels which soldiers could bolt together and push across a river without heavy equipment and in a short time. Thanks to its variable length and load capacity, heavy vehicles and tanks could cross it, and yet it could be built even under enemy fire. The Allies used it to cross watercourses and to replace destroyed bridges all over Europe and on other fronts; in its simplicity and reliability it was ahead of its time and it stayed in engineering use long after the war.

Building and painting tips

Before gluing, plan how long a span of bridge you want to build and how you will set it into the scene. Glue the lattice panels on a flat surface so that the structure does not twist. Unify the steel parts with a dark base, pick out the edges and the rivets with a dry brush and add traces of rust and abrasion. A wooden bridge deck and the surrounding terrain will give a diorama life; washes and pigments will underline traffic and weathering.

Who the model is for

  • Diorama builders looking for a striking engineer element
  • Collectors of Allied equipment of the Second World War
  • Modelers interested in engineer and bridging subjects

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
