An injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary Soviet ZIL-131 off-road truck in 1:35 scale from Zvezda. It is an entirely new tooling; the set contains 442 parts and a decal sheet. The model has a well-worked cab, chassis and cargo bed. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The ZIL-131 is a Soviet off-road truck with 6x6 drive, produced in series from 1966 as the successor to the earlier ZIL-157. It was powered by a gasoline eight-cylinder engine. It was one of the most widespread military trucks of the Eastern Bloc: it served for decades and became a universal carrier for bodies of every kind, from a flatbed, a tanker and a workshop to a radio station or a fire tender.
It is also a machine that many modelers know from life. The ZIL-131 was a common sight in Czechoslovakia: it was operated by the Czechoslovak People's Army and by the Soviet units stationed in the country, and in the fire tender version it served with fire brigades long after 1989. It is therefore not just exotic hardware from photographs, but a vehicle that was at home there.
Work from the frame and the chassis: it is best to finish and paint the running gear and the interior of the cab before the cab is closed up. Use thin cement for polystyrene, which is drawn into the joints by capillary action. Apply a primer before painting; it reveals imperfections and unifies the surface. An airbrush suits the base shade. Apply the decals onto a gloss base, so that no silvering forms underneath them.
A truck is a rewarding basis for a diorama: the bed can be filled with a load, a crew can be added and, above all, you can play with the patina — washes bring out the rivets and panel lines, while pigments and mud effects on the wheels, in the wheel wells and on the bottom of the frame give the model a story and turn it into a vehicle that really did drive off road.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
