The subject is a robust piston machine that, after being retired from naval service, gained a second life as an air tanker for fighting forest fires. The model is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted kit.
The Grumman AF Guardian was an American carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft of the late 1940s and it was the largest single-engine piston machine ever to operate from the decks of aircraft carriers. In service it worked in pairs: one aircraft carried the search radar, the other the detection equipment and the anti-submarine armament. After the end of its naval career, some of the machines were converted into firefighting air tankers: they received a tank for fire retardant in the fuselage, which they dropped over the seats of forest fires. In this civilian role Guardians were still flying in the 1970s. This model captures exactly that firefighting Fire Bomber version.
Glue the plastic parts with a thin cement for plastic and fill and sand the seams before painting. Apply a primer and use an airbrush for the even civilian color scheme and the conspicuous warning stripes. Firefighting machines tended to be worn by service, so discreet weathering, emphasized panels and traces of use around the exhausts and the tank will bring the model to life. Apply the decals onto a gloss coat and seal the model with a matte clear coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
