Self-adhesive masks for the glazing of the Italian CANT Z.501 Gabbiano flying boat in 1:72 scale. Intended for the Italeri kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Gabbiano, meaning seagull, was a single-engine flying boat from the design office of Filippo Zappata. It first flew in 1934 and immediately drew attention with a long-distance flight that won it a world record among seaplanes. The high-mounted wing carries a nacelle with the engine and a gunner position above it, and the wooden flat-bottomed hull settles onto the water. The Regia Aeronautica used it to patrol the Mediterranean, to search for survivors and to escort convoys; its slow speed was a weakness in war but an advantage in the rescue service.
The set brings pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the clear areas and the frames of the canopy. That gives a sharp transition between glass and frame on the model with no hand work with tape, which pays off doubly on an aircraft with glazing divided like this one.
The surface has to be clean and dry. The individual pieces are lifted with pointed tweezers or with a stick with a moistened tip, laid on the center of the area and pressed down from there toward the edges. After spraying they are peeled off before the paint has fully cured, so that they do not take the edge of the coat with them. A cotton swab moistened with water removes any adhesive residue.
The glazing is first freed of fingerprints and left to dry, and only then masked. It also pays off to spray the interior shade onto the frames first and the outer color over it, because the frame is usually as visible from the inside as from the outside.
