About product

FV4101 Charioteer in the Middle East, 1:72 - IBG Kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from manufacturer IBG, depicting the British tank destroyer FV4101 Charioteer as it served in the Middle East. Besides plastic parts, the package also includes photo-etched parts and decals for markings. It is a modern kit with fine detail — in the small 1:72 scale it makes for a compact yet surprisingly detailed model, suited to a smaller display case or a diorama.

The real subject

The Charioteer was developed in the early 1950s to solve an awkward problem: the British Army needed to get plenty of guns with sufficient penetrating power into the field, quickly and cheaply. The answer was pragmatic — take the proven chassis of the Cromwell tank from the end of the Second World War, powered by a twelve-cylinder Meteor engine, and fit it with a new, fairly large turret carrying the powerful 20-pounder gun, the same weapon carried by the Centurion. The result was a lightly armored but heavily armed vehicle, a classic tank destroyer: meant to fire from range and from cover, not to engage in a direct duel. It served only marginally with the British Army itself, but sold well abroad. It was in the Middle East that it saw real combat service, and it kept fighting there long after it was considered obsolete elsewhere.

Building and painting tips

On a vehicle in this scale, start with the running gear — seat the wheels and tracks and let them cure fully while everything is still accessible. Glue the photo-etched parts (typically fenders, grilles, mounts) with cyanoacrylate. Remember that the long gun barrel is the model's most vulnerable part — fit it last. Apply a primer before painting, then the base color with an airbrush; sandy and parched, earthy schemes suit Middle Eastern deployment. But the tank's real charm comes from weathering: a dark wash into the engravings and seams, dry-brushing on the edges, dust pigments on the hull underside and tracks, and light scuffing where the crew climbed over the vehicle.

Who the model is for

  • modelers of military hardware in 1:72 scale
  • anyone interested in postwar British armor and Middle Eastern conflicts
  • those who like fine modern kits with photo-etch
  • diorama builders who want an unusual vehicle with a distinctive long gun

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A British tank destroyer from the early 1950s. It was created by fitting a new turret with a powerful 20-pounder gun onto the chassis of the wartime Cromwell tank - a lightly armored but heavily armed vehicle.

It focuses on the Charioteer's deployment in the Middle East, where the vehicle served with foreign operators and took part in regional conflicts. The decal sheet matches this version.

Yes, besides the injection-molded plastic parts, the package also includes photo-etched sheet metal and decals.

The 1:72 scale means small parts plus photo-etch, so the model suits modelers with some experience rather better. A more confident beginner can still manage it if careful with the gun barrel and the etch.
