A set of masking templates for models of the Japanese Ki-51 Sonia in all versions, 1:72 scale. The templates are stuck down before the paint is sprayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mitsubishi Ki-51 was a Japanese two-seat army aircraft used for attacks on ground targets and for reconnaissance; with the Allies it carried the code name Sonia. A radial engine powered it and the landing gear stayed fixed, with wheel fairings only. The canopy was long and divided by a row of frames, so masking it is one of the most time-consuming jobs on the model.
The set holds pre-cut masking templates for the glazed areas of the Ki-51 model, for all versions of the aircraft. The templates follow the shape of the individual panes of the glazing, so cutting tape by hand along the frames is no longer needed. The exact make-up of the set, and the kit it is calculated for, are given by the manufacturer's instructions.
Stick the templates onto clean, degreased glazing before spraying, not after it. Lift each piece out with the tip of a sharp blade or with tweezers and lay it so that its edge follows the edge of the frame exactly; then press it down with a soft tool over the whole area, so that no paint runs under the edge. Spray the paint in several light coats, as a heavy coat tears when the mask is lifted. Peel the template off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch; waiting longer makes it hold more and there is a risk that the finish will come away with it.
The set suits anyone who wants the canopy frames sharp and straight without lengthy cutting of tape. It saves time above all on the busy glazing of this aircraft. The package holds only the masking templates; the model, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
