CM-05 Marker Burnt Iron

The color

Burnt Iron is a dark metallic tone with a warm cast shifted slightly toward brown, the kind steel takes on when it has been heated and has cooled again. Against clean steel it looks darker and dirtier, but against black it keeps a metallic sheen, so it does not stay flat on a model. The shade carries the manufacturer's part number CM-05.

Where it is useful

On barrels and gun muzzles, on exhausts and the area around them, on the worn edges of hatches, on the steps and grab handles the crew hold on to, and on places where the finish has rubbed through to bare metal. It also serves well to bring small metal fittings to life when they look too uniform after the base coat. A marker is convenient for that kind of work because it can hit exactly one edge without mixing paint and without stripping down an airbrush.

How to work with the marker

• Before first use take the cap off and press the tip carefully onto scrap paper a few times, until the paint starts to flow.
• Work over small areas; on a large continuous surface the transitions between strokes will show.
• Metallic pigments settle, so shake the marker between strokes.
• Test the compatibility on an offcut before varnishing over it, as varnish may dissolve the metallic layer.
• After work push the tip back in and close the marker carefully, otherwise it will dry out.
