Vallejo German Green Brown 17 ml — an undercoat primer

This is not a final paint but a primer: a water-based acrylic undercoat in a 17 ml bottle. Its task is to create a uniform surface with good adhesion before the actual shade comes into play. On a primer the paint then holds far better, it does not flake off when masking tape is peeled away or during ordinary handling of the model, and it covers better. The shade matches the name, that is a subdued green-brown.

Surface preparation and use

• First wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry completely. Grease from the fingers and remains of release agent are the most common reason a primer does not hold.
• Shake the bottle thoroughly before every use — the pigment settles to the bottom when it stands, and without stirring you will apply mostly binder.
• Apply in thin coats so that the engraved lines and rivets stay legible. A primer is meant to unify the surface, not to fill the detail in.
• Do not thin it with alcohol or with lacquer thinners. It is a water-based acrylic system and a foreign thinner will curdle the binder into flakes.
• Let the undercoat cure before the next coat. Dry to the touch does not yet mean cured, and masking too early will cost you.
