What the marker pen does

A clear matte top coat in the form of a marker pen from the Gundam Marker range. It serves to knock the gloss off a finished surface where setting up an airbrush would not be worth it: on an individual part, on a small area or in a place that stayed glossier than its surroundings after earlier work. The matte layer scatters the light, so the surface stops reflecting its surroundings and the model reads as a whole.

How to work with it

The surface has to be clean, dry and degreased. The paint reaches the tip after the tip has been pressed against a surface several times; try the stroke on an offcut of plastic first, not straight on the model. Draw continuous strokes in one direction and let the coat dry before you come back to the area. Going over a coat that is not dry smears it, so instead of a unified surface you get streaks. On a larger area, apply two thin coats rather than one generous one.

What to watch out for

• Go over decals only once they are completely dry and have settled onto the surface.
• A matte layer slightly lightens the saturation of the color beneath it, so judge the result on a test part first.
• Wipe the tip after work and store the marker pen carefully closed, otherwise it will dry out.
• For large continuous body surfaces a sprayed matte clear coat is more suitable; the marker pen is a tool for detail.

Terms of supply

The package contains the marker pen. The model, paints and other aids are not part of it, unless stated otherwise. Work in a well-ventilated room and keep the marker pen out of the reach of children.
