This set from the Grimdark range is intended for finishing bases, that is for making a figure stand not on a bare disc but on a piece of terrain. The word in the name points to a muddy, churned-up surface, the kind that suits a broken landscape, the surroundings of trenches, field roads and the bleak scenery for which the term Grimdark has taken hold in board and tabletop games.
A base decides how a figure finally reads: a bare disc keeps it in a display case as a product, whereas a worked surface sets it into a story. The set therefore comes into its own on gaming figures, on single display pieces and on small dioramas, where a muddy surface ties the figure to its surroundings. The edge of a smaller scene or a section of terrain on a board can be worked the same way.
It is best to finish the base before the completed figure goes onto it; if you work around the figure, cover it. Wash and degrease the surface beforehand so that the material stays on it. Proceed in layers and let each one dry thoroughly. A muddy surface looks more convincing when matte and glossy places alternate on it and when tracks, ruts and imprints are pressed into a layer that has not yet dried. The order of the individual products from the set and the drying times are given by the manufacturer in the instructions; keep to them.
The set is sold separately. Figures, bases, brushes and tools do not belong to it, unless stated otherwise. Check the exact composition of the package against the manufacturer's data.
