Five marker pens for orc warriors: the characteristic green skin, a blood red, a bone and a wood brown and a dirty white.
Responsibility details are not available.
In gaming worlds the orc has grown from an ordinary monster into a whole culture with armor of its own, signs of its own and above all a color signature of its own. Three things hold it together: a deep green body, metal worked with a hammer rather than a file, and materials taken from elsewhere, that is, untanned hide, roughly hewn wood and the bones of the defeated. None of it is meant to be clean and none of it squared off to right angles.
Orc Flesh is the load-bearing shade of the skin. Infernal Red belongs on war markings, on cloth wrappings and on blood, because in this aesthetic red is used as a signal, not as an ornament. Bone Brown covers trophies, teeth and straps. Wood suits axe handles, shield boards and rough boarding. Putrid White then serves as a dirty highlight, which can also be used on eyes and runes.
Green needs a light base under it, otherwise it goes gray. On a casting primed dark it therefore pays off to go over the raised surfaces with a lighter tone first and only then lay the flesh color on. The marker manages that without a palette, but thin layers have to be kept to: two light passes blend smoothly, one heavy one fills every wrinkle.
Imperfection suits an orc. After the basic painting, a dark wash into the folds and a dry brush across the edges of the metal are enough to make the gear read as battered. The flat surfaces of shields deserve a few scratches in a light tone; the shape of the casting will take care of the rest by itself.
