1:72 Modern Mounted Amazons Set 1

Modern Mounted Amazons, set 1 (1:72, Dark Alliance)

A set of unassembled and unpainted plastic fantasy figures in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Dark Alliance. The package holds 10 mounted warriors in 10 poses and one figure on foot; the riding animals come in five variants, a horse, a lion, a deer, a predatory beast of the saber-toothed type and a mythical lizard. The designation modern here apparently refers to a newer edition and the sculpting style of the set, not to the present day. It is a set to be glued and painted yourself, not a finished model.

What the figures represent

Amazons are warriors in a fantasy world of swords and magic; in the conception of this set they are showy female fighters in a mix of plate armor and bared areas, riding horses as well as exotic and mythical animals. Thematically they are closer to colorful fantasy (in the style of the worlds of comics and books) than to the historical Amazons of antiquity. They suit a striking cavalry force in battle scenes as well as effective dioramas.

Building and painting tips

Cut the figures and the riding animals carefully from the sprue (the casting tree) with a sharp modeling knife, clean up the flash and glue them with plastic cement or super glue. Apply a base coat (primer) before painting. Paint with a brush: acrylic figure paints suit skin, leather, the metal of armor and the fur of the animals. Bring out details such as faces, hair and the decoration of armor with a thin brush, and a darker glaze (a wash) in the recesses will add depth.
