Marker pens for undead warriors: a necromantic purple, an icy blue, a deep gray, black and a pale flesh without a drop of blood.

In European legend the word revenant denotes a dead man who has come back with a will and a memory of his own. He is not a mindless skeleton and not a wild vampire, but a figure who gives off cold precisely because he has kept part of what he used to be. In painting there is only one way to handle that: suppress everything warm. Where a living soldier would carry a flush and tanned skin, there has to be ash, stone and a bluish shadow instead.
Necromancer Purple carries the main color accent, that is, the cloak, the hood or the glow in the eye sockets. Ice Blue works as a cold light that suits a blade edge as well as the edges of cloth. Strong Grey fills in stone, metal and frayed fabric. Black closes the shadows and draws the outline. Vampire Flesh then gives the skin a pallor that looks more convincing on a figure than a purely white ground.
With the undead it is the sharp edge that counts. The tip of the marker can be drawn like a pencil along the raised edge of a rib, a helmet or a piece of armor, leaving the light on that edge alone. This way is faster than working with a brush and holds the same width of stroke along its whole length. On large areas it pays off to do the opposite and lay the paint onto a piece of film and lift it from there with a brush, because direct pressure on a wide surface leaves marks.
The combination of purple with icy blue takes a dark wash into the recesses well. Once it is dry, highlighting the edges is enough to make the figure readable across the table.
