A new coat of paint lasts only a short time on a machine. Water finds its way under a rivet, a streak of oxide runs out of a seam, a greasy ring stays around a filler neck and the underside of a body is covered with patches of settled dust. This set brings together the shades with which those traces can be put together without the model looking uniformly rusted through.
The eight bottles of seventeen milliliters are not put together from a single line. According to the numbers of the shades, paints meant for a brush meet here with two tones from the line for an airbrush and shades from the line aimed at vehicles. The practical consequence is simple: some of the bottles are thicker and some thinner, so each suits a different step.
The procedure is layered: first a thin patch, after it has dried a narrower streak, and finally a spot of emphasis. Anyone who works by wiping with a damp brush will appreciate that an acrylic binder can still be blended while fresh. The set holds no pigments and no varnish; those have to be added separately.
