A set of four acrylic paints for the hardware of the Nationalist side in the Spanish Civil War: dark gray, burnt brown, sand yellow and dark green.
Responsibility details are not available.
The war of 1936 to 1939 brought to the Iberian Peninsula hardware that was only learning how to fight. German light tanks, Italian tankette vehicles and the aircraft of both countries went through their first real action here, and their finishes changed several times over those three years: from the factory dark gray through hastily oversprayed field patterns to blotches applied right at the unit.
The package holds four shades: a dark gray to the German prewar standard, a burnt brown, a sand yellow and a dark green. It is exactly this foursome that covers both the single-color finishes and the field blotch patterns, which arose on the southern front from a combination of two or three colors applied freehand.
These are acrylic paints with a water-thinnable binder. The consistency is set so that they can be sprayed practically without thinning and at the same time leave no brush marks when working on a surface. They dry matte, so later coats of dust and clear varnish sit on them well.
On a tank the dark gray rarely stays clean; it pays to brighten it with a drop of the sand yellow on the horizontal surfaces and, the other way round, to darken it in the shadows under the fenders. On blotch patterns, laying them on with a soft brush gives a better result than masking, because the edges of the blotches were blurred and irregular at the time. The package does not hold thinner, brushes or a model. Before spraying it is worth shaking the bottle honestly, because earth pigments settle to the bottom faster than the others.
