Eight acrylic shades for the American air forces in the European theater of the Second World War, including an aluminum for bare metal finishes.
Responsibility details are not available.
American combat aircraft operating from bases in Great Britain at first wore an olive drab finish on top and a neutral gray underneath. As air superiority shifted to the Allies in the second half of the war, aircraft began to leave the factories with no finish at all and shone in bare duralumin. This set covers both phases, because besides the earth and gray tones it also contains an aluminum shade.
What is inside: a dark olive drab tone, a neutral gray, a medium dark gray, a lighter green, an aircraft green, a second olive shade, a yellow for interiors and an aluminum. The pair of greens suits the mottled overspray of the upper surfaces, and the yellow tone matches the color of the protective finish of the interior spaces and the landing gear bays.
A practical note: the olive finish of American aircraft faded quickly and on long-serving examples shifted toward a brownish tone. The difference between freshly repainted areas and the rest of the airframe can be built up precisely by mixing the two green shades in the set. The aluminum then calls for a smooth and perfectly prepared surface, because a metallic pigment emphasizes every scratch.
The set serves as a starting palette for models of bombers and fighters, not as a complete bench outfit.
The inside of the cockpit was painted differently from the outside, and the yellow-green protective tone is the first thing a viewer sees with the canopy open. It is therefore applied before the airframe is closed up, together with the dark areas of the instrument panel and the frames.
