Eight Vallejo Game Color shades for wooden hafts and metal blades. Two rusts, a silver, a dark metal, warm brown tones and a black glaze.

The haft of an axe, the stock of a crossbow or the shaft of a halberd almost always meets a metal head, and it is exactly this transition that tends to be the worst handled on a figure. This set of eight Game Color shades covers both sides at once, warm browns for the wood and two metal tones for the blade and the fittings. It therefore deals with the whole object at once, not just one half of it.
A dirty brown serves as the base for the wood, while a warmer brown tone and sienna over it draw in the growth rings and the worn areas. The pair of rusts distinguishes damp from dried corrosion, so it can be graded by how long the weapon lay without care. The silver suits a sharpened edge, the dark metal the head. The black glaze ties the whole together and pulls into the grooves, so that a roughly carved texture finally shows.
The palette is not tied to fantasy alone. The same shades will do on tools stowed on a vehicle fender, on wooden crates and on the beams of a half-built building in a diorama. On larger areas it pays to bring the base brown to life with two coats thinned differently, because perfectly evenly painted wood looks like plastic.
