A simple route to an even coat

An airbrush with a top-mounted cup and a dual-action trigger is part of the basic equipment from the moment a modeler is no longer satisfied with a spray can. The operation is divided into two movements: pressing the trigger lets the air through, pulling it back opens the needle and releases the material. The amount of paint is thus controlled smoothly and with a single tool you can produce a covering area as well as a narrow line.

The workmanship

This variant carries a single nozzle of four tenths of a millimeter in diameter, which is the most universal size one can choose. It will manage primers, ordinary covering shades and thicker materials and does not clog as easily as finer assemblies. The cup is a fixed part of the body, so there is no fitting on the airbrush that could work loose during use and begin to seep.

Maintenance

After each color, flush the cup with thinner and draw the needle through; when the work is over, dismantle the front section and clean the nozzle with a soft brush. Dried material inside is the most frequent cause of an uneven spray pattern and it is removed by soaking, never with a wire, which damages the seating. Needles, seals and air caps can be bought individually, so the tool is not scrapped because of a single worn part.

What you need with it

On its own the airbrush is not enough: a source of compressed air with regulation belongs with it, and ideally a moisture trap as well. For modeling work one works in the region of about one bar, and for thicker materials the pressure is raised. Extraction, or at least a ventilated corner, also pays off, because atomized paint stays in the air for a long time.
