The Falklands sky of 1982

The second part of the Falklands range concentrates on the aircraft and helicopters that in 1982 operated from the deck and from land. The eight shades are put together to British standards and with each tone it is set out which squadron and which machine it belonged to.

The darkest sea gray covered the Sea Harrier of the FRS.1 version overall, as No. 800 Squadron from the ship Hermes and No. 801 Squadron from the ship Invincible carried it. The machines of No. 809 Squadron had the medium sea gray above and the barley gray below on the wings and tail surfaces, which is a difference worth attention when building a particular fuselage number. The dark green belonged to the overall camouflage of the Harrier GR.3, to the upper surfaces of the Vulcan B.2 bombers and to the Chinook HC.1 helicopters, and the dark sea gray to the undersides of the Vulcans and the upper camouflage of the Harriers. The blue-gray is the overall color of the anti-submarine Sea King machines of the HAS.5 and HAS.2 versions and of the light Wasp HAS.1, and the olive covered the transport Sea King HC.4 and the Wessex HU.5. The black completes the undersides of the Chinooks and the green and black patterns of the Gazelle and Scout helicopters.

For builders of Falklands models

The conflict of 1982 is rewarding precisely because carrier and land-based machines with different finishes met in it. The eight cover the aircraft and the helicopters of both arms, so they do for a whole group of models of one campaign.

Painting advice

The gray shades differ from one another finely, so try them out on an offcut of sprue before spraying and do not mix up the labels of the bottles. Cover in thin layers and let the surface cure completely before applying the decals.
