A flying, jumping or falling model has a problem that a standing figure does not know: it has nothing to touch. The flying stem holds it above the surface and is deliberately slender so that it does not compete with the model in the overall view. An ordinary figure turns into a scene, because the viewer fills in the movement that is not directly visible in a photograph or in a display case. In a photograph, free space also appears between the model and the base, through which the background can be lit.
The choice of length is not cosmetic. A shorter stem holds the model just above the base and suits a jump, a lunge, a low pass or a figure that is pushing off. A longer version creates distance instead, and the model then reads as flight at altitude. The shorter version also has a practical advantage in a display case: the model stays low, so it fits even a shelf with less clear height and does not stand out in a row of other models, which is welcome when a collection is presented as a whole.
