Gray crushed stone with a coarse grain in a shaker with a volume of 945 cm³. Large stone for garden railroads, embankments and rock scree.

In a coarse grade, gray behaves differently than it does in a fine one. It stops being a surface and becomes a heap of stones on which every edge is visible. That is precisely why builders in the large scales choose it even where on a small layout they would reach for a finer material.
It will find a use not only under the rails. Scree below a rock face, a firmed-up bank of a pond, a quarry spoil heap or stone hauled to a dam under construction look considerably more convincing with large grains.
When laying it, help yourself with a spoon and a flat brush. Coarse grains cannot be spread with a finger as easily as powder, but on the other hand they hold the shape you give them and do not slide back into a plane.
Carry out the soaking patiently. Water with dish soap has to pass right to the bottom of the layer, as otherwise the glue catches only at the top and the bottom stays loose. That is easy to tell: once it is dry, press with a fingernail and the layer either holds as a whole or cracks.
Anyone who wants to achieve the impression of a really old line can scatter a pinch of finer material onto the finished ballast and rub it lightly in between the large grains. It looks like silt that the wind has carried here over the years.
