Gray crushed stone of the ordinary medium grade in a shaker with a volume of 945 cm³. The classic coloring of the track ballast of main lines.
Responsibility details are not available.
Medium gray is the color that everybody who has ever stood by a track has in mind. Crushed granite under the ties on main routes turns gray within a single season, and in this shade it looks believable both in open country and in a cutting driven between rocks.
A shaped embankment looks better than a flat surface. Let the slope fall away at a gentle angle, keep the edge up at the rail sharper and let the grain melt into the grass at the bottom. That is exactly what ballast looks like when it is tamped from time to time and slides slowly in between.
Proceed carefully under turnouts. The moving point blades have to stay free, so the material is spread noticeably more thinly around them and glue is dosed here drop by drop, not over the whole area.
Gray is rewarding off a railroad scene too. It serves as macadam in a yard, as fill around a concrete ramp or as crushed stone thrown about an area that is just being demolished. In such cases it pays off to add a few larger stones to the scatter.
Store the rest of the material closed and dry. Damp makes the stone cake together, and the stuck lumps can then be crushed only under pressure, which breaks some of the grains down into dust.
