Three filters for equipment painted gray. A blue one for dark gray, a neutral gray one for white winter finishes and a violet one intended for German tank gray.
Responsibility details are not available.
A filter is paint thinned so heavily that once the thinner has evaporated only a suggestion of coloring is left on the surface. It hides no detail underneath it, does not dull the edges and covers nothing that was visible before. Its task is to shift the whole shade a little elsewhere, to unify areas sprayed in several goes and to take away the uniformity of a paint job that real equipment never has. The difference between paint and a filter is best seen on the large area of a side, where a fine marbling arises once it has dried.
The blue filter is intended for dark gray, that is the shade worn by German ground equipment in the first years of the war and in which every shadow drops away into black without help. Blue opens the tone up and gives it back its depth. The neutral gray filter is aimed at white areas, mainly at winter finishes, which without dirtying look like paper. The violet filter then gives German gray the warmer hint that a coat of paint exposed to sun and rain for several seasons has.
A wide soft brush and one pass across a whole panel are best, not repeated going over. The filter is left to dry and only then is it judged whether a second layer should come; it can perfectly well be added to part of an area only. Under a filter there should be a gloss varnish, otherwise it takes unevenly. It pays to work on a model laid down dry and free of fingerprints, because grease at the point of contact repels the paint and a light window is left behind it. A thinner and a brush are not in the package.
