Ground Base Layer by Woodland is a loose scenic material from the scatter range with which the base layer of terrain is laid down on a diorama.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a loose scenic medium for building terrain, not a finished scenic object. The name is a trade designation from the manufacturer's range and on its own it does not reveal the coarseness or the shade, so check those on the packaging.
Building terrain has a settled order: a load-bearing structure of polystyrene, plaster or cork, then the base layer, then coarse scatter, after that fine scatter and vegetation and finally tufts, bushes and detail. The base layer does three things at once in that order. It covers joints and the marks left by tools, it unifies the surface so that all the further materials settle in the same way, and above all it gives the later scatter something to bind to. If it is skimped, that only shows at the end: fine scatter catches unevenly, the bare base shows through in places and the surface reads as blotchy. Repair at that stage means taking several finished layers apart, so it pays to give the base time even though in the end it will not be visible on the finished scene.
For modelers who build dioramas and scenic bases from scratch and want a reliable base under the final layer. It also suits repairs and extensions of scenes already under way, where a surface has to be leveled before further scatter.
The material is supplied as a loose medium; glue, paints and tools are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
