About product

U-STAR hand-held mini vise

A small vise for the hand is a step between the fingers and bench clamping. A part sits firmly in it, but you can turn the whole tool as you need, so you do not have to bend over the bench or search for an angle from which you can reach the spot. For a modeler it is one of those tools that get used far more often than you would expect before buying one.

Field of use

In the preparation stage of a build it holds a part while parting seams are cleaned up, while holes are drilled with a hand chuck and while small shapes are filed. In the painting stage it takes over the role of a holder: the part is firmly clamped, both hands are free and the fresh finish touches nothing but air. It also suits gluing small assemblies, when you need a joint to stay still until the glue has set.

How to work with it

  • Clamp a surface that will not be seen, or a part painted last.
  • Tighten the jaws with care; thin plastic and resin are easily dented.
  • When drilling, guide the bit at right angles and without pressure, as a thin bit snaps very easily in plastic.
  • Keep removing dried paint and swarf from the jaws, otherwise they transfer to the next part.
  • On longer sessions, rest your forearm on the bench; your hand will then stay steady much longer.

Who it is for

For modelers who work with small parts and want both hands free while drilling, sanding and painting. This is bench equipment, not a kit or an accessory for a particular model.

FAQ

You hold a hand-held vise and turn it, so you can set a part exactly against the light or against the nozzle. A bench version, by contrast, holds by itself and suits places where you need both hands for the tool and more pressure.

Not at a sensible tightening. All the same it is better to clamp a surface that will not be seen, and on thin-walled parts to choose the force carefully so that the plastic is not dented.

Yes, a clamped part can be sprayed and brush-painted and then left to dry in the position in which you applied the paint. Just wipe the jaws before painting, so that dust or old paint does not transfer to the part.
