Hexagonal Rod (1 pcs) W-2,0mm L-250mm

Plastruct hexagonal profile 2.0 x 250 mm is the heaviest of the hexagons offered. Discs sliced from it make coarse bolts and nuts for large scales and dioramas; it is modeling material, not a kit.

About product

Plastruct hexagonal profile, width 2.0 mm, length 250 mm

The heaviest hexagon in this range: a polystyrene rod with a hexagonal section 2.0 mm across and 250 mm long. It contains no parts of a model: it is modeling material, not a kit, that is a blank for your own work. Supplied as a single piece.

A hexagon as a bolt factory

A hexagonal section can do something that neither a round nor a square profile can: slice it into discs and bolts, nuts and rivet heads simply fall out of it. There is no need to make them, only to slice, and every piece is the same as the last. At a width of two millimeters these are coarse, immediately legible bolts of the kind that suit large scales.

That means above all 1:16, 1:12 and 1:6: large tanks, motorcycles, engines and figure scenes, where a fine profile would vanish. Besides bolts it will also give you lifting eyes, industrial detail and coarse fasteners on dioramas (masts, structures, flanged joints) and sturdy struts and rods that are meant to have a technical hexagonal section rather than a smooth round one. It also serves as an imitation of hydraulic couplings and fittings on heavy equipment.

Use

  • Coarse bolts, nuts and rivet heads in the large scales 1:16, 1:12 and 1:6.
  • Lifting eyes and industrial detail on dioramas and construction scenes.
  • Sturdy struts, rods and posts with a technical section.
  • Flanged and bolted joints on heavy equipment and structures.
  • Imitating hydraulic couplings and fittings of larger diameter.

Working the material

The material is polystyrene, so it takes ordinary cement for plastic; no special cement for ABS is needed. At this thickness the profile cannot simply be scored and snapped: use a modeling saw or run a knife around it several times, or the disc risks breaking off at an angle. Then sand the cut with fine paper so that the nut seats flat. Spray a primer on before painting.

Who it is for

For builders of large scales, dioramas and industrial scenes who need conspicuous but accurate fasteners in quantity and at a consistent quality.

The material is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

Because its section is itself a bolt head. Slice the rod into discs and you get finished bolts and nuts with six flats; a round profile gives only a rivet, a square one only a four-sided head.

For fine bolts, yes: in 1:35 this size will look coarse. It fits large scales such as 1:16, 1:12 and 1:6, lifting eyes and industrial detail on dioramas. For 1:35 the 1.0 mm size is a better fit.

At two millimeters use a modeling saw, or run a knife around the profile and only then cut through. Scoring and snapping works only on thin profiles. Sand the cut at the end.

With ordinary modeling cement for plastic: this is polystyrene, not ABS, so nothing special is needed.
