About product

Tamiya High Finish Flat Brush No.0 — the Smallest Flat Brush in the Line

A flat modeling brush from Tamiya's High Finish (HF) line. This is a modeling brush, not a kit — you will not get any plastic parts or decals, but a tool for applying paint. The bristles are synthetic (for this line, Tamiya uses a specially developed synthetic fiber designed for modeling paints), stiff and evenly aligned into a flat edge. The number 0 denotes the narrowest stroke width among the flat brushes in this line — it is a flat brush for fine work, not for large areas.

Use

  • Small flat surfaces and panels — hatches, doors, panels, plates, jerrycans, small vehicle equipment.
  • Edges and sharp transitions — the flat bristle edge lets you bring paint precisely up to a line without overrunning it.
  • Small-scale dry brushing — picking out edges and rivets with a minimum of paint on nearly dry bristles.
  • Continuous coats at small scales — where a larger flat brush would no longer fit.
  • Works with both acrylic and enamel modeling paints.

Why No. 0 and Not a Larger Size

Choose No. 0 when you need a flat edge but a narrow stroke. On a larger continuous area it is unnecessarily small — you would need many strokes and the coat would end up streaky. Once an area exceeds a few millimeters, reach for a wider flat brush (No. 2 and up). Conversely, No. 0 is not the right choice for thin lines, lettering or figures' eyes — that calls for a pointed brush.

Care of the Brush

  • Clean the brush immediately after use with the matching thinner: acrylic paint — water or acrylic thinner; enamel paint — mineral spirits or enamel thinner.
  • Never leave the brush standing tip-down in a jar — bent bristles will not straighten back out.
  • Do not press on the bristles; guide the brush lightly, since pressure will splay the edge and ruin the flat stroke.
  • Store it flat or bristles-up, and after cleaning, gently reshape the edge to its original form.

Who it is for

For modelers who paint by hand and need a precise flat brush for small flat areas and edges — typically on vehicles, accessories and smaller scales. Also useful as a complement to an airbrush for touching up details.

A modeling tool, not a kit. Paints and thinners are not included in the package. Ventilate the area when working with thinners.

FAQ

For the High Finish line, Tamiya uses synthetic bristles developed specifically for modeling paints. They are not natural hair.

For small flat areas and edges — hatches, plates, doors, small equipment, and dry brushing edges. It is too narrow for larger continuous areas, where a wider flat brush is the better choice.

No. A flat brush has a straight edge, not a point. A pointed brush is the right tool for lettering, instruments and figures' eyes.

Right after use: acrylic paint with water or acrylic thinner, enamel paint with mineral spirits or enamel thinner. Never leave the brush standing tip-down in thinner.
