About product

Mineshima High Power Nipper D108

A modeling nipper from the Japanese brand Mineshima. The words High Power in the name state its role in the workshop: these are not fine finishing nippers for the last millimeter of a sprue gate, but a tool for a heavier cut, where material has to be bitten through that a thin edge will not manage without risk.

Why keep two pairs of nippers in the workshop

The most frequent way a modeler ruins fine thin nippers is a cut into a thick sprue gate or into the sprue itself. A thin single-blade edge is ground to a very sharp angle in order to leave a smooth cut, and that is exactly why it chips on thick material. A sensible division of work looks like this: the heavier nipper separates the part from the sprue with a margin, and only then do the fine nippers even the sprue nub out at the part itself. Both last longer and the result is cleaner.

Use

  • Separating parts from the sprue of a kit, including thicker sprue gates.
  • Shortening plastic profiles, rods and thicker stock.
  • A rough cut, followed by finishing with a fine nipper or a file.
  • Work where a thin finishing edge would be at risk.

Work tips

Never clip a part tight against its wall. The plastic is compressed under the edge and turns white at the cut, and that is a mark not even paint will cover. Leave a stub of the sprue gate and remove it in two steps. Use the nipper only on plastic and soft material. Cut photo-etched parts, metal pins and wire with a different tool, because hard material chips the edge and the damage is irreversible. After work, protect the edge with a cap, or at least do not store the nipper loose among the other tools.

Who the nipper is for

For modelers who build a lot and want to spare their fine finishing nippers. It will also serve well when building dioramas and when working with plastic profiles.

The dimensions, the material and the hardness of the edge are stated on the packaging of the tool. The tool is a modeling nipper for plastic.

FAQ

It will not, and it should not. The sensible way is to separate the part with the heavier nipper, leaving a margin, and to even the sprue nub out with a fine nipper or a file.

We do not recommend it. The tool is a modeling nipper for plastic, and hard material will chip the edge irreversibly.

The plastic is compressed under the edge and damaged internally. The remedy is to clip with a margin from the part and to remove the stub with a second cut.

The length of the tool and the hardness of the edge are stated on the packaging.
