Deposits of mud and dried dirt are among the things that tell a model apart from a toy. The paste is intended for the finishing work known as weathering: for the lower areas of vehicles, for wheels and tracks, for fenders and for the surfaces that soil would really reach in service. It also finds a use on the base of a diorama, on the footwear of figures or along the edges of roads, where the model has to be brought into line with the base so that the two read as one whole.
It is applied with a brush or a spatula, in smaller amounts and with an eye to where the dirt would actually have run and where it would have stayed. A heavier layer holds a three-dimensional surface, while a thinner layer lets the color beneath show through, so it is good to start light and build up. Let it dry thoroughly and only then judge the result. Clean your tools straight after work, while the paste has not dried, and handle preparation and any thinning according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
The effect tends to be more convincing when the paste is combined with pigments, washes and a dry brush: the deposit gives the surface texture, the pigment adds a dusty cast and the wash emphasizes the hollows. Judge the particular shade against the manufacturer's color range and make a test on a piece of scrap plastic.
The package holds the paste itself. Models, brushes and further material are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
