The red skin of demons, glowing cracks in a lava bed or red-hot metal in a smith's forge all stand or fall on whether the modeler has enough intermediate steps between yellow and deep red at hand. That is exactly the transition this set covers, and without the shades having to be mixed by hand.
Inside you will find a matte red, a deep dark red, a cadmium red, a light orange, a volcanic yellow and a burnt red. Lined up one after another they form a continuous scale that can be worked from the bottom up: you start with the darkest tone in the recesses, each further step goes onto a smaller area, and the lightest stays only on the edges and in the places where heat is meant to radiate.
Red and orange pigments cover less well than other shades, so it pays to put a light base underneath them. Over a white or light gray undercoat their saturation comes out fully, whereas over a dark base they look muddy. Apply several thin coats rather than one heavy one, and let the paint dry thoroughly between them. It is usually good to push the final highlight on the edges a little further toward orange, because saturated red on its own never looks as if it is glowing.
