Six bottles cover the cool part of the color wheel in an order that makes sense at a glance into the box. Deepest lies Prussian blue, dark and slightly greenish; under it French blue as the middle of the scale, then light blue and sky, and at the edge turquoise with azure, which already reach into the green band. The differences between neighboring tones are small enough for a transition to look smooth, and yet distinct, so that two coats applied side by side do not merge into one.
Blue is a shade you can easily fall out with in the mixing dish. Brightening it with white turns it into a gray with a cast, darkening it with black drags it into dirt, and mixing exactly the same tone a second time tends to be a lottery. A prepared sequence leaves this step out: the lighter tones serve as a base and as the area, the middle ones as the color of the object itself, and the darkest closes the folds and grooves. It comes into its own on a fantasy cloak, on the skirts of a naval uniform, on the undersurfaces of aircraft and on water in a diorama.
What works best is application in thin coats, whether with a brush or with an airbrush. A heavy coat of covering paint floods fine relief, whereas several thinned passes hold the detail and at the same time let the transition between tones stand out. The more saturated shades also work as a glaze over a lighter base, which creates an intermediate step that is not in the package on its own. Before applying, it is advisable to rid the surface of grease and to let each coat dry properly.
