This set of six aims in exactly the opposite direction from muted palettes. A saturated yellow, orange and red stand here alongside magenta, green and blue, all mixed for maximum color purity, so they hold their saturation even where ordinary shades already look dusty. The pigment is dense and the shade does not break down even when thinned into a semi-transparent coat.
They show to best effect on heraldic surfaces, pennants, emblems and shields, on racing and record-breaking machines, on the poster-bright paintwork of motorcycles or dragsters and on anything meant to draw the eye. In figure work they serve as a glaze: a thin coat of deep red or magenta laid over a lighter base deepens the folds of cloth without taking away the modeling. Blue and green work the same way on metallic and magical effects.
They are thinned with water and take both a brush and an airbrush. With strong pigments the rule is that the first coat should be thin: a dense paint laid on all at once fills the fine relief of a casting and wipes out the very detail you want to emphasize. The saturated red and magenta also have the lowest covering power of the six, so it pays to put a white or light gray base under them. It is a good idea to clear-coat the finished surface, because pure water-based shades are more sensitive to abrasion than muted tones.
