Four acrylic shades for the Iraqi Type 69 II medium tank. It holds a base green, a blue green, desert sand and a brownish sand tone.

The Type 69 II came about in China as a further stage of development derived from the Soviet T-54A and reached the market at a time when demand for it in the Middle East was exceptional. Iraq ordered them in the thousands and committed them in the long war with Iran as well as in 1991. The machines left production in factory green and in the desert were oversprayed to sand tones, often carelessly, in the units themselves and without degreasing, so the original green showed through on edges, around hatches and everywhere the crew leaned.
Start with green over the whole surface, wherever it will end up visible. Apply the sand overspray onto it, but not evenly: let the green come through on the lower part of the hull, behind the fenders and in the corners the airbrush did not reach during a field application. For exposed edges, salt or a lacquer layer that you break up with a brush once the water has dried proves itself, so that the green appears where use would have worn it away.
A desert machine tends to be dull in color, which is why it pays to work with shades within a single area. Lighten the roof of the turret and the upper surfaces, leave the sides darker and blur the transition. Only onto a base played out this way does dust belong, which is always lighter than the paint under it, along with greasy streaks around the engine grilles.
