A kit of the Karl-Gerät 040 self-propelled siege mortar put together from plastic bricks. The parts fit into one another mechanically, so the model needs no glue, no putty and no paints. Given how massive the real subject is, it is a larger and more demanding build than on ordinary models in this category. The number of parts and the dimensions of the finished model are stated on the box. The designation Ziu points to the name of a particular machine, since the individual examples built carried names of their own.
The Karl-Gerät was a German self-propelled siege mortar of the Second World War, built in only a few examples. The 040 form carried a barrel of 60 cm caliber. The whole stood on a tracked chassis, which served chiefly for movement over short distances and for setting the weapon in a firing position; for longer journeys the machine was carried by rail on special cars. What is characteristic of it is the short barrel of large diameter, the tall rear end with the lifting mechanism and the exceptionally massive running gear with many road wheels. Handling the ammunition was a chapter of its own and called for attendant vehicles with a crane.
Go step by step according to the instructions and do not run ahead; on large brick models a mistake in the basic structure shows up only many steps later. Build the lower frame and the running gear on a flat surface and check as you go that the model does not bind and stands without twisting. Press the parts home over their whole face, not by a corner. Leave the barrel and the lifting mechanism until the end, as they are the most exposed parts in handling. Do not glue or paint the model; it would damage the surface of the parts and make taking it apart impossible.
The model is put together from plastic bricks. It is not glued, sanded or painted. Glue, paints and tools are not needed.
