The abrasive is carried on a rigid flat base, and that is exactly the difference from paper held between the fingers. Paper follows the shape beneath it, so it sands a flat surface into a shallow hollow and rounds the edges off. A plate keeps a plane along the whole length of a stroke, and the large working surface also lets you go over a whole wall of a part at once rather than in strips that leave steps in the surface.
The number gives the fineness of the abrasive, and twelve hundred is among the finest steps of any use in building a model. You take practically no material off with this plate; its job is to smooth out the scratches left by coarser sanding and to prepare a smooth surface for paint. It pays off anywhere a gloss or metallic finish is planned, because such a finish brings out every scratch in the base rather than hiding it. Within the range it is the finest step; coarser work is handled by the plates with grit 600 and 1000.
Use smooth strokes across the whole surface and press only lightly; heavy pressure will not speed the work up, it only pushes the shape out of true and rounds off edges that should stay sharp. Check the progress against the light, in which unevenness shows up sooner than it would after painting. Keep removing the dust, as it gets caught between the grains and starts to scratch the surface. Fine steps are often sanded wet, because water carries the dust away; check the manufacturer's instructions as to whether the version of the plate allows it. Wash and degrease the finished surface before painting.
