A Lifecolor set from the Makeup line, aimed at the two most frequent marks that the weather leaves on equipment: settled dust and dried streaks after rain. It is precisely these two impressions that separate a model looking like a freshly sprayed molding from a machine that has a few weeks in the field behind it.
Dust holds where nothing wipes it away: on horizontal surfaces, in the corners between superstructures, around bolts and tie-down points, on the fenders and around the running gear. It tends to be lighter than the base color and its tone changes with the region in which the machine served. Rainwater, by contrast, runs down vertically and carries the dust with it, so narrow light or dark streaks stay on the sides, starting below edges, tie-down points and hatch covers and fading downward. Both can be graded: first a fine veil across the whole surface, then pronounced marks in a few places only.
Work on a dried and unified surface, so that the marks can be blended out without the paint of the model moving underneath them. Apply a little at a time and draw the excess off with an almost dry brush from the top downward, that is the way water would run. Dust, on the other hand, should be sprayed on or stippled with the brush held at a right angle to the surface, because the direction of a stroke would give it away. Work in layers and let the surface dry between them. Choose the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
For modelers who want to give a finished model a history, whether they are building equipment or a whole diorama. The model, the glue and the thinner are not included, unless stated otherwise.
