About product

Payne Grey Liner — cool lining

Payne Grey is an established name among artists for a dark gray pitched toward blue, and exactly that is the part played by this Lifecolor liquid pigment from the Liquid Pigments Washes range. It serves for lining and bringing out detail where a warm brown or a neutral gray would look out of place.

Two lines over each other

A cool liner combines splendidly with a neutral one. First the line is laid in with a weaker neutral gray along its whole length, then the cooler tone is added in selected stretches — into the shadows, into the deeper seams and on the areas that are meant to recede visually. The drawing thereby gains a depth that a single uniform line does not have.

Make corrections at once. While the coat is fresh, the excess can be wiped off and the line thinned. Once dry, the pigment settles and intervening is coarser. That is why it makes sense to work in short stretches and check right away how the result looks.

How it differs from an ordinary wash

A wash tends to be built for laying on across an area and wiping off afterwards. A lining liquid pigment is dosed deliberately into the line and its strength is governed by the amount on the brush, not by how much is wiped off. The result is a pigment deposit in the groove that holds the drawing even after further steps of patina.

Use

  • Cool lining of gray and blue-gray finishes, typically naval schemes.
  • Shadows in deeper seams, where a darker and cooler tone belongs.
  • Deepening the drawing after a first, weaker lining.
  • Bringing out detail on light areas without a shift into warm tones.

Who the color is for

For modelers who already do lining and want to work with it deliberately — a warm tone on brown and sandy areas, a cool one on gray and blue-gray. The difference shows on a finished model more than you would expect.

Keep out of the reach of children. Shake the contents thoroughly before every use and keep the bottle closed. Try the procedure out on a test piece with the same surface.

FAQ

When the surrounding finish is coolly pitched, that is, gray or blue-gray. A warm tone on such an area acts as a foreign element.

Yes, and it is a proven procedure. You lay the whole drawing in with a weaker neutral tone and add the cool one only in selected stretches and shadows.

Step in at once. While the coat has not dried, it can be thinned by wiping. Once dry, the correction is markedly coarser.
