A rectangular three by four grid gives twelve positions for figures on 25 mm bases. The tray is there so that a unit moves across the gaming table in one piece: the player picks it up, puts it down in a new place and does not have to rearrange every figure separately.
Unlike a square, a rectangular grid has two different sides, and in battle games that is a difference that counts. Set the tray with its longer side forward and the unit takes up a wider frontage, reaches the enemy sooner and gets around terrain more easily. Turned the other way it takes up less width, passes more easily between buildings and leaves room beside it for a neighboring unit. Choosing a grid is therefore a decision about the footprint, not just about the number of positions.
For players who put medium-sized units on the table and want the formation to be the same every time. It also serves well when a collection is transported, because it holds the figures in a regular grid instead of letting them travel loose in a box. Twelve positions are also a sensible starting format if you are still finding out how large your units will be and do not want to begin with the largest grid.
