Paints standing loose about the bench are the first thing to get knocked over while a model is being built. A rack gives the bottles a fixed place, holds them upright and above all leaves them visible from above, so that finding one particular shade does not take longer than the painting itself. According to the name this is a smaller, space-saving version, that is, a rack for part of a collection or for the paints for the job in hand, not for a whole reserve.

Why it pays off

Order on a modeling bench is not about looks but about preventing damage. A knocked-over bottle of acrylic ruins a model in progress faster than you can pick it up, and a lid glued shut with dried paint costs time at every opening. A rack also keeps the paints together, so that they are tidied away in one movement when the work is over and none are left open.

What to bear in mind when using it

• Put the rack on the side opposite the hand holding the brush or the airbrush.
• Arrange the bottles by shade, not by manufacturer; you then look for them by eye.
• Store the paints upright in the rack too, with the lid done up, so that nothing sets in the neck.
• Put metallics and heavily pigmented paints where you can reach them most easily; they need shaking before every use.
• Before you buy, compare the diameter of your bottles with the holes in the rack.
