Six shades for the most conspicuous British aircraft: black Hunters, the yellow and red Gnats of aerobatic teams and the white and blue coloring of test machines.

When the Royal Air Force is mentioned, few people think of gray. This set aims at exactly the opposite end of the spectrum, at machines that were meant to be seen from miles away. The first shade is a deep black of the kind carried by the Hunters of the Black Arrows team of No. 111 Squadron, and the second the lemon yellow of the Gnats of the Yellowjacks team, which belonged to No. 4 Flying Training School.
Two reds follow, and the difference between them is substantial. The darker cherry belonged to the Gnats of the Red Arrows up to 1979, while the newer and richer signal red the team carries to this day. Anyone building an older and a newer machine side by side will appreciate that the set contains both: to swap them means putting a model a whole generation out.
Conspicuous schemes have one trap in common: every imperfection of the base is visible on a smooth single-color surface. It therefore pays to sand the surface carefully before the primer.
The remaining pair, white and dark blue, make up the contrasting coloring of British test aircraft, nicknamed raspberry ripple for its conspicuous stripes. The white covers the upper part of the fuselage and the wings, the blue the underside. The scheme was carried by the machines of British test establishments and looks striking on a model even with no further treatment.
The shades are tied to the British color standard, so they can be used outside this set as well, whenever you come across its numbers in instructions. The paints belong to a range the manufacturer recommends applying with a brush, which with large single-color areas means reckoning with several thin coats instead of one thick one.
