Ten oval bases measuring 35x60 mm. The oval footprint suits anything longer than it is wide: a figure in mid-stride, a pair of figures side by side, an animal or a longer piece of equipment. The size is the same throughout the pack, so a whole group stands on the same footing.
A base gives the model a firm stance and clearly frames the scene around it. It is used when building new figures, when replacing a damaged or unsightly original base, and when bringing an older collection into line, where every piece sits on something different. A pack of ten covers a whole group at once.
Attach the figure to the base first and only then finish the surface, because working around the feet is harder than on an open area. Bed loose materials into a layer of glue or thin paste and, once dry, go over them with thinned glue, otherwise they crumble away. Wash and degrease the base before painting and lay down a primer, without which paint rubs off a smooth surface. The rim is usually painted in a single opaque color, because a crisp edge between rim and surface looks better than a smudged one.
