A display plinth with an oval footprint of 17 x 11 cm. It is aimed at models that are markedly longer in one direction than in the other: at vehicles, machinery, an aircraft on a stand or a pair of figures joined into one scene.
An oval has no corners, and therefore creates no lines competing with the outline of a model. With an angular board the eye compares the edges of the plinth with the edges of a vehicle and every turn off the axis looks like an inaccuracy, even when it was deliberate. An oval footprint does not have this problem. You can turn a model at an angle to the longer axis and the composition stays calm. The longer dimension at the same time allows free space to be left in front of the model and behind it, which is exactly the room in which a scene can be developed further.
What decides is the footprint of the finished model, not its scale. Measure the longest and the widest point including everything that overhangs and add the margin that is to stay free all the way around. For the distance to be noticeable, count on a model markedly shorter than the longer dimension of the board. In a display case an oval also finds use where models stand in a row one behind another, because a rounded outline looks less static than a grid of right angles and the whole shelf reads more calmly.
