The abbreviation NMM stands for non-metallic metal. It is a way of painting in which the sheen of gold or steel is created not by a metal pigment but purely by the arrangement of light and shadow. The painter paints a reflection onto a surface: a sharp transition from a dark tone to a light one, a hard point of highlight and back again.
